Why Is Pubic Hair Curly?
Published in Paperback by Blue Books Pub House (July, 1995)
Author: Vernon Coleman
Average review score:

*LOVE* this book
I never wanted to find out why my pubic hair was curly until my grandmother bought me this book, choosing, as I did, like most well balanced people do, to shave off said hair with my father's clippers, but now, I'm fascinated. Join Vernon as he takes on a thrilling rollercoaster ride of pubic discovery, from the invention of pubic hair in the early 1600's (which was considered "a lewde and evile poxxe on manne and beyste" by the unwashed masses), to the production of the first merkin in 1798, through to the stockpiling of pubic hair during the Second World War. An unmissable addition to the serious book lover's collection. A timeless classic.

This book was published after Mr. Howard's death in 1992. In contains several sections that are just tremendous. My favorite is a section called Vernonisms. Here Mr. Howard has invented hundreds of great words to describe spiritual realities. If you like Vernon Howard, you'll love this book.

Soul Sword: The Way and Mind of a Warrior
Published in Paperback by Hampton Roads Pub Co (October, 1996)
Author: Vernon Kitabu Turner
Average review score:

"Soul Sword," transformed my thinking.
I first heard of "Soul Sword," from a friend who said it was the best Zen book he had read, bar none. I was surprised to learn that an American had written it. Later, I discovered that the author, Vernon Kitabu Turner came about the Zen flavor the hard way, he has lived the life.

I was fascinated that a person who had admittingly come from a Christian (Baptist) background could take to both the Martial Arts and Zen as if they were but a seamless thread.

The book helped me to see that the primary problem of human beings is that we have made fragmentation of mind a way of life, thus spirit and body are out of harmony, as well.

"Soul Sword," discusses faith as a true and demonstrable powe in daily life and real situations, not as a Sunday School lesson focused only on the actions of men and women of faith in yesteryears. To warrior of "Soul Sword" fiinds God in his fingertips and the warning of impending danger. He finds Him in the still moments.

What I like most about "Soul Sword," is that it is not a book about Zen, martial arts or spirituality in general. It is all of those things. Vernon Kitabu Turner is not afraid receive wisdom at its source. With the boldness of a Lao Tzu or a Bankei, the Zen Master, he recognizes that the secrets all lie withiin. He challenged me to really seek that master. "Soul Sword" helped me to see that no one has to be a victim.

If you ever felt there was something about yoursef, about human beings that was eluding you then "Soul Sword" is the book which will lay it out for you to feel...FEEL. I keep it handy for a booster shot when the forces of the outerworld seem to be closing in, or I think I am powerless. Iam looking forward to Vernon Kitabu Turner's next book.

This is a book to experience.
Some read for entertainment and some read for instruction. It is not often that one finds a book that meets both criteria. I found that unlike many self-help books, I actually apply this book to everyday life. Also, with colorful anecdotes that show how the author's teachings and discoveries are incorporated in his own life, the book is entertaining. I used applications from this book to improve my free throws, through the realization that there is more than one way to look at things and accomplish goals. Where as many may consider this feat miniscule, the author led me to open my mind and see the relevance in all things. To focus on what I don't know as opposed to what I do know is the key to knowledge and potential enlightenment. Vernon Turner is an eloquent writer that leaves one reminiscent of Voltaire in the way he makes the seemingly complex, obvious. Take the time to experience this work.

A DELIGHT TO READ -- A GREATER DELIGHT TO EXPERIENCE
I am a journalist who met and talked with Vernon Kitabu Turner before reviewing his book for a national paper.

Generally I do not like inspirational books, or those with a 'self-help' theme. Those books heavy with pretense and portent about the consequences of not following the author's advice -- whatever kind of rubbish THAT might be. Soul Sword was not so at all, assuming no knowledge that the reader couldn't himself gain by sufficient dedicated search, and experience....Kitabu's revelation of himself and his own journey demonstrates this.

It was a delight to read for this reason first. But beyond this, SS is a journey of discovery -- a slicing of the soul to reveal a cross section of yourself, now and in the future...This daily war that is a warrior's lot becomes defined by your own experiences.

SS is not only for the 'warrior' who must make the journey into himself, and to discover his potential, but for all who must fight those little daily battles.

Once you begin, you're not likely to walk away from it as another 'good read'. SS will remain with you, enriching your life and broadening your vision.

The most exciting idea in this book for me was that it is by becoming nothing that we can be everything -- a principle I believe in. It is on this ground that the battle is won.

Put it on your bookshelf: in fact put it in your purse or briefcase...

Psycho-Pictography: The New Way to Use the Miracle Power of Your Mind
Published in Paperback by Prentice Hall Trade (August, 1996)
Author: Vernon Howard
Average review score:

I recommend this constantly to my friends.
I first read this book about five years ago, and I can't count the number of people I've recommended it to. Some of the writing style seems a bit corny or outdated, but the content is amazingly powerful.

I don't think much of most self help books, but this one really does teach us to meditate on the way our minds work, and the resulting increased awareness really can bring about lasting change. It does take a lot of work, but obsessive thoughts can be brought under control with this awareness, leading to a lessening of chronic anger and depression, which in turn allows a brighter outlook and a more optimistic future.

Vernon really knew his stuff.

this book will change your life!!
HI!Psycho-Pictography came into my possession in a very strange way. I was in a need for growth, and it came to me thru a bizarre circumstance and answered ALL my questions and showed me ALL the answers. People always said i was positive and i thought so as well, until i read this book and saw the little negative blocks that i and others put up for ourselves keeping us from reaching our goals and obtaining inner peace. people don't realize how these little negative blocks can build into a giant wall.i wasn't even finished with the book when i got my dream job on my favorite tv show! and my life has steadily improved from there. but it's not about money and jobs, it's about being at peace and finding your true self! learning to deal with people and things that arise in a whole new way. he said, things that made you mad will now make you laugh! when i first read this i was skeptical, but it is SO TRUE!!!i laugh all the time! i can cry for others, but i can no longer cry for myself, if i get sad about myself i start to laugh cause i realize how silly i am being, i have nothing to be sad about and nothing to fear! all thanks to vernon howard!READ THIS BOOK!

READ THIS AND GROW
This book was originally published in 1965, hence the wacky title. Get past that, highlight what appeals to you, live it, and you will grow. At the heart of this book are 'Four Golden Keys to New Freedom and Happiness', cheesy huh? Well, they work: 1. A sincere desire for inner change. 2. Contact with workable principles. 3. Self-honesty. 4. Persistence. Common sense, right? It's amazing how uncommon the use of it is. Even those who have heard of this advice and worked with it need REVIEW and PRACTICE, but most of all, a different outlook, a different perspective. This book provides that and more if you can open your mind enough to truly apply the wisdom within and see if it works for you, which, as the author states, is the only true test.

Lasting Valor
Published in Hardcover by Genesis Press, Ltd. (01 December, 1997)
Authors: Vernon J. Baker and Ken Olsen
Average review score:

Great addition to "stuff we should have been taught."
A timely book that adds to current discussions about race. Like the story of La Amistad, Vernon Baker's story is one that should have been heard by a lot more people a lot sooner. Baker and Olsen make us understand what it was like to be a black soldier in a white man's army and just as importantly, the unglamorous difficulties of being a soldier in often no-win situations.

The story weaves between taught World War II battle scenes to growing up in small-town Wyoming. If you like stories about real people of character who unflinchingly tell a tale, you will like this book. It adds yet another refreshing perspective not only to the race discussion, but the realities of war.

It's Not What Happens to You: It's What You Do With It
I purchased this book to tap into the life lessons of another black leader.

And I really gained more than I expected. Vernon Baker talks about race, and how being Black during WWII, while in the army also meant having to work harder to prove yourself than his white commanders had to.

While these racial problems still exist everywhere, and everyday, on many levels, the difference is that Baker's behind, and everyone one of his troop's behind was on the line, just because they had to make a difference in times when their white leaders used them to cover up the fact that they were cowards. To be in, and part of the team, if you will, they had to be braver than their cowardly commanders who really didn't want them there.

Another interesting point in this story is, "The American Army mostly ignored its black combat troops along the Western Front while the French hailed their valor and awarded the Cross of War, to every member of three all-black regiments. Most American history books fail to record any of this, and the Army certainly didn't bring it up."

"Lasting Valor," he gives details that weaving WWII battles, his Wyoming upbringing, and the women who came into his life (his traditionally thinking male identity), into one story that will touch everyone's heart.

Also, this book ends in a message similar to Herman Wouk's message, from "War and Remembrance," when it states, "War, however, is the most regrettable proving ground. For the sake of my nineteen comrades, I hope no man, black, white, or any color, ever again has the opportunity to earn the Medal of Honor. War is not honor. Those who rush to launch conflict, and those who seek to create heroes from it, should remember war's legacy. You have to be there to appreciate its horrors. And die to forget them."

I'd love to see this book become required reading for high school students, throughout America.

Takes courage to put this book down - a must read.
Okay, so I originally bought "Lasting Valor" to put on my coffee table in the hopes I would seem more interesting to visitors and perhaps just a wee bit erudite too. But then I read it (as you must) and realized, damn, this book is GREAT. Written in the first person by World War II military veteran Vernon Baker (with journalist Ken Olsen and a superb foreward by General Colin Powell)), this is a tale of how it was to be black in an army that, while it hated you, needed you as cannon fodder. Part of this saga came to light last year when Baker was belatedly given the U.S Medal of Honor for his previously ignored acts of heroism. But the full irony of this "recognition" - more an empty apology that comes far too late for the nineteen men that Baker saw die on a ridge in Northern Italy - can only be understood when you read this book, not the short, simplified newspaper articles. I am neither a military buff nor particularly a fan of memoirs, but I could not put down this book - which is clearly meant for everyone - black, white, young, old, democrat, republican. Most gripping is the tale of betrayal by white commanders who left (yes, literally walked away from) Baker and his men when the battle got too intense ("I still hear a German commander scream Feuer, howitzer shells whistling in, followed by the whish, whish, whish of mortars, the trees around us shredding....") and then the maddeningly smooth cover-up of that cowardice by the army. There is a wry edge to Baker's voice that hovers somewhere between wise and bitter and this only makes the book more interesting - for all those who think that a nice shiny medal can absolve the injustice and the horror, Baker asks you to think again.

The Milepost : Trip Planner for Alaska, Yukon Territory, British Columbia, Alberta & Northwest Territories Spring '98 to Spring '99 (50th Ed)
Published in Paperback by Vernon Pubns (March, 1998)
Authors: Kris Valencia Graef, Vernon Publications, and Comunications Corp Morris
Average review score:

The most useful book ever (if you plan to go to Alaska)!
I have owned 3 copies of this book...the most recent being the 1996 version. The book is an absolute wonderland of information about fishing, camping, siteseeing,....ad infinitum - on the great(ist) state to the north - Alaska. I have been saved many times (gas, motels, food) by referencing this book while traveling in the north. My fist experience with Milepost was in 1982 when we drove the Alcan and Cassiar highways to Alaska. If you take this type trip without this book it is like working with half your brain!! (or less). It can't be recommended enough, even if you are flying into Alaska and renting a car (or taking a taxi, or a float plane!!).

Don't Go Without It!
This is the best source for travel to Alaska, whether you are traveling by car, plane or cruiseship. I bought a copy to plan my trip last May ('97). I was traveling alone, and was not renting a car.

The guide lists shuttle services, train services, ferries, phone numbers for major and minor attractions, and has a fairly comprehensive listing of all hotels, motels, B&B's, restaurants, etc. The book list everything, milepost by milepost, for every region of the state. It will save you time and money. This will become your bible for travel in and around Alaska!

This is a book to take with you for saving those souvenirs like ticket stubs, postcards, brochures, etc. and the memories from the trip of a lifetime!

If your budget allows for only one guidebook -- this is THE BEST, bar none!

An absolute must for travel in the High Northwest!
I made a trip from Atlanta, GA to Alaska this summer and wore down this book in a few short days. The confusing, lonley (and sometimes unpaved) miles of road North demand exactly the kind of detail The Milepost provides. The book also includes practical info on gas stations, food, and where to find your next drink. Don't go North without it.

Angel Shared
Published in Paperback by American Book Publishing (01 June, 2002)
Authors: Vernon Powell, Joe Nendza, and Allan Macpherson
Average review score:

Very impressed!
As I normally tend to stick with authors I know, I was not expecting to be bowled over by a relatively new author, but I was very impressed! Vernon Powell has written a complex plot, spanning nearly a century, yet the story is not so complex as to be confusing. I could not wait to get to the end to see how he tied it all together. His characters are sharp and interesting. I especially liked his colorful descriptions. Can't wait to read more of his works.

BOOK DESCRIPTION
Julie Lindsey-Thomas and her husband Greg Thomas are making the biggest move of their lives-- into the twenty-eight-room mansion, that Julie has inherited from her eccentric great-aunt Elizabeth Samuels. They can't wait to turn it into a beautiful Bed and Breakfast. Unbeknownst to Julie, she wasn't the only potential heir: Great-Aunt Elizabeth had an illegitimate son, Jake, who was born mentally handicapped, and his true identity as Elizabeth's son was kept a secret. After Elizabeth's death Jake found refuge at the Keeler Institute, where those with marginal abilities were able to thrive...until now. The organization has no more resources for people like Jake, and Jake has no resources at all.

Julie's and Jake's lives are about to intersect- an intersection made more interesting because Julie and Jake are protected by the same guardian angel. The troubles that finally bring these two together, and the resolution of those troubles, make a fascinating tale.

Unforgetable
After seeing good reviews for Angel Shared on several different sites I decided to check it out for myself and I am very glad that I did. I love a book that the characters stick with me. If they seem real enough that days later I think...wonder what Greg and Julie are doing or I hope Jake is making it ok....then I know the book is worth recommending to others. This is one of those books. Where are you V. Powell, we want to hear more. Great Book, keep up the good work.

The Glory of Titletown: The Classic Green Bay Packers Photography of Vernon J. Biever
Published in Hardcover by Taylor Pub (September, 1997)
Authors: Peter Strupp and Vernon J. Biever
Average review score:

An uneven retrospective from a master sports photographer.
Vernon Biever is one of sport's greatest photographers. His coverage of the Green Bay Packers throughout much of the team's history reveals the work of a master of his art. All fans of sports photography should find this collection inspiring. However the book offers far too few photographs to be a true retrospective tribute to Biever's work. Most are black and white, undoubtedly reflecting the medium in which they were shot. Some also are unfocused, indicating poor or sloppy reproduction or camera work. This seriously detracts from the quality of the book. As the book is arranged on a time continuum, and with the blurred images coming later in the book, it appears as if Biever's work began to suffer in later years. One would doubt this is the intention of the editor or the publisher. But it does detract from the quality of the book and is not worthy of Biever's reputation. Perhaps this can be corrected in future editions.

The Glory of THE GLORY OF TITLETOWN
Far and away the best book of its kind. This book is put together on quality paper with large, wonderful photographs, many of which I had never seen. Each photograph is accompanied on the facing page by never-before-published (often quite funny) recollections of Green Bay players past and present. Obviously, the editor put this book together as a work of love for the subject matter. A unique book, and one of the best Packer books ever published.

Packer Eye Candy
This unique photo album is like candy for your eyes. A true centerpiece for my collection.

I'll Quit Tomorrow : A Practical Guide to Alcoholism Treatment
Published in Paperback by Harper SanFrancisco (September, 1990)
Author: Vernon E. Johnson
Average review score:

catchy cover for the problem drinker in your home
The problem drinker took it to work the very next day as I had "left" it on the coffee table without saying a word. Another book reccommend is Am I or am I not an alcoholic? I read him a chapter before he goes to his game. He doesn't verbally fight with me about reading it like I thought he would.

Important and helpful
This is a simply written, clear explanation of the disease of alcoholism. It is very difficult to understand the compulsion to drink if you haven't experienced it firsthand. This book will help those trying to understand the struggle, as well as those unsure if they are in the struggle. I also recommend it to non-recovering clinicians who are dealing with addicts in their work

Read this in the treatment center
It was not until I read this book that I finally realized that I needed help.
